Discount Groceries

Recently, we partnered with a great resource for our community (and many others) – Gaballi Food and we are SO excited! Once a month, an order is placed online (you can register here), then the food is delivered to a local drop site. We’re super lucky to have the drop site at OUR location – 205 North Ave in Millvale!

The groceries are 30-70% off of retail price, a great variety, and healthy! Going through the menu, we were amazed at the options, but even more at the awesome prices (check out the March menu here)! Once you sign in, you can make your order and even pay directly online.

The best part is – for each order placed, we earn FREEFOOD for our community! Think of the blessing we can be with this great resource! In the next few months, we’ll be able to process EBT SNAP Benefits (food stamps) as well, which will expand our reach greatly in our community.

March orders are due on the Sunday, the 18th and will be delivered to 205 North the morning of Saturday, the 24th.

Summer Outreaches

A usual Pittsburgh February would leave me longing for summer and feeling as though it will never come… but this year, summer doesn’t seem quite as far away. Maybe it’s our unusually warm weather or lack of snow – I think it might just be the excitement as I head into my second summer of community outreach with Millvale Matters! Summer is a crazy time of year for us, but also the most rewarding (remind me that I said this when I’m pulling my hair out from outreach planning).

I just finished a phone meeting about one of our summer outreaches, the Holy Hands Expedition. This is our third year with the Holy Hands crew and I’m so excited to work with them again! The past two years we have done a week of outreach that ends with a block party and grocery giveaway. Last year we also included a Mega Sports Camp – something similar to a Vacation Bible School.

We have some of the same plans in the works for this year’s outreach, but we’re also going to see some changes this year. We’re working with a different distributor for the food giveaway, making some changes to the block party, and switching up the events of the week to maximize the number of people we reach.

While I can’t believe it’s already time to start planning our summer outreaches again, I’m so excited to see what happens this year! If you’d like to be a part of the Holy Hands Expedition this year, let us know on the Get Involved page! You can also donate by following the link and typing “Holy Hands” in the notes section.

Big Changes, New Developments!

In the past few months, Millvale Matters has undergone some major changes! We will continue to be involved in our regular community outreach events (which we love!), but we have a lot of exciting things on the horizon…

In January we launched Stuff Mart as a way to meet the physical needs in our community. So far, we have a decent amount of food and we’re seeing the gently-used clothing rolling in! This ministry will enable us to meet the needs in our community faster than we were previously capable. Instead of sending out a notice about a need, then waiting for donations, we can pull from our in-house resources. This is a super exciting development for us, and we hope you’ll partner with us in this endeavor!

We’re also working toward financial coaching, addiction and grief counseling, job search assistance, parenting classes, and other educational courses. These goals will take a bit more planning and involvement to get started than Stuff Mart, but we’re hoping to announce our next step soon! Make sure to follow our blog to keep up with what’s happening next!

Do you have any ideas for other things we can do? Leave us a note in the comments section!
